VERDICT: The Golden Globe and BAFTA award winner will be a special guest at this year’s festival.

Award-winning British actor Clive Owen, known for his roles in film, television, and stage, will be a special guest at this year’s 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF). At the festival’s closing ceremony, Owen will receive the KVIFF President’s Award.

Clive Owen began his acting career after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and gained recognition for his performances in Shakespearean productions for the Young Vic Theatre Company. He made his cinematic debut in 1988’s “Vroom” and later appeared in television films and series, including the successful crime series “Chancer” (1990–1991).

In 1997, he played the character Dan in the world premiere of Patrick Marber’s “Closer” at the Royal National Theatre. His performance in the stage production led to his portrayal of the character Larry in the film adaptation, alongside Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, and Jude Law. This role earned him critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA award, and an Oscar nomination.

In addition to his notable film roles, Owen received Golden Globe nominations for his performances as Ernest Hemingway in “Hemingway & Gellhorn” (2012) and for his portrayal in the television series “The Knick” (2014–2015). Recently, he portrayed Bill Clinton in the series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (2021) and is currently starring as the private eye Sam Spade in the noir miniseries “Monsieur Spade” (2024).

To honor Clive Owen’s achievements, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will screen the award-winning film “Closer,” which was released twenty years ago.
