The 76th Locarno Film Festival offers 11 sections, 3 competitions and 20 awards, highlighting both quality and variety. It is a Festival that explores cinema from every perspective, discovering in-the-present filmmakers and films destined to have a future.
Concorso internazionale
The Concorso Internazionale explores new territories in moviemaking. This year’s selection of 17 titles, all world premieres and one as an international premiere, will be competing for the Pardo d’oro – the Grand Prize of the Festival of the City of Locarno to the best film with CHF 75,000 to be shared equally between the director and the producer. Also to be awarded are the Special Jury Prize, Pardo for Best Direction and 2 Pardos for Best Performance.

Concorso Cineasti del presente competition offers a selection of first and second feature films, primarily world premieres, directed by emerging global talents. It’s devoted to the discovery of tomorrow’s cinema, which deserves to be supported beyond all genre distinctions. Non Competition sections of the festival are:

Piazza Grande is both the Festival’s heart and its showcase. With its giant screen (one of the biggest in Europe) endowed with truly exceptional projection quality, the Piazza Grande is one of the finest open-air venues in the world. This magnificent and unique setting is where every night festival audiences come together for a big cinematic event. The programming on the Piazza Grande offers prestigious screenings, most of them world, international or European premieres, introduced by the director and the cast.

Fuori concorso is the section exploring the form of cinematic storytelling, from without genres. It’s the pleasure of freedom and impossible juxtapositions. It’s a free zone where cinema becomes a place of continuous discovery without restrictions.

Open Doors Screenings has been committed to exploring the diverse filmmaking of Latin America and the Caribbean from 2022 until 2024. In 2023, the spotlight will be turned on films from the South American region.
