Valletta Ditch is exactly that, a ditch. It was included in the original design of Francesco Laparellli’s vision for Valletta to
serve as a final defense to prevent invading enemies from reaching the city’s walls. The design consisted of a bastioned land front with two cavaliers separated from the mainland by a deep ditch that measured 12.5 meters (40 ft) in depth and 25 meters wide (82 ft.) from to Grand Harbor.
