VERDICT: Scene filmed at Blue Lagoon, Comino Island, Malta, standing in for a Greek Lagoon

Filmed in Malta: In this scene, Achilles (Brad Pitt) walks along the coast of ‘Greece’ looking for his mother, the Sea Nymph Thetis (Julie Christie), in order to ask her advice about joining Odysseus (Sean Bean), the King of Ithaca, in the siege on Troy.

The epic historical war film was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by David Benioff. The film features an ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson and Orlando Bloom. It is loosely based on Homer’s Iliad, although the end of the film (the sack of Troy) is not taken from the Iliad, but rather from Quintus Smyrnaeus’s Posthomerica, as Iliad concludes with Hector’s death and funeral.
Troy made over $497 million worldwide, making it the 60th highest-grossing film at the time of its release. However, it received mixed reviews. Three years later, Troy: Director’s Cut was screened at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival, and received a limited release in Germany in April 2007. Warner Home Video reportedly spent more than $1 million for the director’s cut, which includes “at least 1,000 new cuts” or
almost 30 minutes of extra footage (with a new running time of 196 minutes).

Comino Island is a small island of the Maltese archipelago between the islands of Malta and Gozo in the Mediterranean Sea. Named after the cumin seed that once flourished in the Maltese islands. The island is the least densely populated area in the Republic of Malta. It has a permanent population of only 2 residents, and is part of the municipality of Ghajnsielem, in southeastern Gozo. One Priest and one policeman commute from the nearby island of Gozo. The island is a bird sanctuary and also a nature reserve.
